About the preparation and analysis of the RPW/SCM noise measurements, to be performed during spacecraft Earth magnetic lobes crossing.

General

Purpose & Objectives

During the CP (TBC), Solar Orbiter will pass inside the Earth magnetic lobes, where the B field amplitude is very low. It is the occasion for RPW to measure the SCM sensitivity.

The SCM Noise Measurement Working Group (SNMWG) is in charge to prepare the operation (timeline, RPW config and associated flight procedures, expected data volume and power, etc.) and participate to the data analysis.

Working Group Members

  • Xavier Bonnin – ROC manager (LESIA)
  • Milan Maksimovic – RPW PI (LESIA)
  • Olga Alexandrova – RPW/SCM operations scientist (LESIA) – WG leader
  • Diane Berard – RPW operations engineer (LESIA)
  • Matthieu kretzschmar – SCM config, data analysis (LPC2E)

Operation preparation

Context

The measurement will have to be done when the S/C is close to the Earth. In the current Feb. 2020 launch scenario this will only occurs during the first week of commissioning and during the Earth GAM at the end of the CP.

During these two phases, the operations will be driven by the MOC. Especially, the MOC will have to perform critical S/C manoeuvres during the GAM, which may interfere with the RPW operation requests for SCM measurement.

Operation Constraints

The operation constraints are not yet known. However the MOC has indicated during the SOWG11 that they expect only 2 sequences of TC in order to control the payload during the E-GAM nav.:

  • A sequence to switch off properly the instrument
  • A sequence to switch on and enter in science mode

This scheme should allow instruments to make some sciences between each manoeuvre during which the payload shall be switched-off.
